Do You Owe Your Employees an Extra Day’s Holiday this Year?
As a business owner or employer, it may be prudent to consider the timing of this year’s Easter bank holiday dates to ensure you do not breach the Working Time Regulations.
//
There are eight permanent bank holidays every year in the UK: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, May Day, Easter Monday, Late Summer and Spring Bank Holiday.
It’s not mandatory that you pay your employees during these dates – you could choose to make bank holidays a part of statutory annual leave.
You could even decide to offer additional pay to employees willing work on these days.
Regardless of how your organisation treats bank holidays, you must clearly outline your intentions in your employment contracts so that your staff members know what to expect.
It would also be wise to take bank holidays with religious significance into consideration, as failure to grant these to employees of a particular religion could amass to claims of discrimination. Allegations of discrimination could also arise if you fail to offer both part-time and full-time employees the same amount of bank holidays.
